What if better intimacy had less to do with technique and more to do with understanding your body?
In this episode of Swapping Secrets, Jess and Lawrence are joined by Miranda Cheng, founder of We The Femme and a practitioner in pelvic care and holistic sexuality.
Together, they explore how the pelvic floor, nervous system, stress and breath can influence desire, arousal and pleasure. Although many people focus on what they should do during sex, Miranda explains why noticing what is already happening in the body can be just as important.
What pelvic mapping can teach you
First, Miranda introduces pelvic mapping and explains how it can help people understand their anatomy, sensations and boundaries.
For example, different areas of the pelvis may feel sensitive, tense, numb or completely neutral. By slowing down and paying attention, people can become more familiar with their bodies and, as a result, communicate more clearly about what feels good and what does not.
The conversation also covers vulva mapping, pelvic-floor awareness and the value of exploring your own body without pressure or judgement.
Why the nervous system matters
Next, Miranda explains the connection between the nervous system and intimacy.
When we are stressed, overwhelmed or distracted, it can be difficult to stay present. Consequently, desire may decrease, arousal may take longer or sensation may feel less intense. However, stress affects everyone differently. While some people lose interest in intimacy, others may seek pleasure as a way to relax and regulate their bodies.
Miranda also explains why many people unconsciously clench their muscles or hold their breath as pleasure builds. Although this response is common, relaxing the body and breathing more freely may allow sensation to spread beyond the genitals.
Getting out of your head and into your body
The episode then moves into practical ways to become more present during intimacy.
Miranda shares simple techniques involving breath, touch, movement and sound. These practices can help people notice physical sensations instead of becoming caught up in performance, expectations or overthinking.
In addition, she discusses how partners can introduce these ideas without making the conversation feel clinical or suggesting that something is wrong. Instead, the focus can be on curiosity, connection and making an already good sex life even better.
Touch, Stretch, Breathe
Finally, Miranda leads Jess and Lawrence through Touch, Stretch, Breathe, a series of body-based exercises designed to show how quickly the nervous system can shift.
The exercises include energising and calming breathwork, moving between tension and relaxation, creating sensation through touch and slowing down to savour pleasure. There is also a surprisingly sensual imaginary watermelon.
While the activities are simple, they demonstrate how attention can change an experience. Therefore, even small adjustments to breath, pace and awareness may create more space for connection and pleasure.
